Rationale / Problem Situation

The impact of high HIV prevalence can be seen in:

  • An increasing number of orphans & children living with sick and dying adults
  • An increasing number of households in which children live alone
  • Increasing numbers of children staying out of school to look after sick family members
  • Children increasingly carrying the burden of care, food security and income generation for affected households.

Service for children at grassroots level is fragmented both within and between sectors. KCH’s stated objectives are to:

  1. Provide shelter and sustainable livelihood to children.
  2.  Provide a joint response to the needs of HIV/AIDS infected and affected children and their families.
  3. Provide input into the implementation of selected national, provincial and local strategies and programmes aimed at addressing the impact of HIV/AIDS on children and their caregivers.

This project is intended to further the implementation of objective (a) providing shelter and sustainable livelihoods in a more extended manner by putting in place appropriate mechanisms.

Problem Statement:
Children lack the care and warmth to seek out and secure a sustainable future.

With the arrival of life prolonging and enhancing antiretroviral drugs, HIV positive people especially can expect to live a longer and more productive life.  And with a more hopeful outlook, it is critical that children are given a care and warm environment to begin to plan for their future, develop their skills and secure an income to improve their quality of life.
