Project Description – Kalinda Children’s Home

Children lack the caring environment to seek out secures a sustainable future.  Therefore, building a home aimed at providing healthcare and education opportunities will increase their prospects of a sustainable future.

Critically, this is about empowering children to improve themselves, their circumstances and the opportunities open to them; including education.  Children will be welcome to return to the organisation for support and care at any time.  As the project develops, this will impact on services provided demanding a more flexible and tiered service approach.
Target Group

Working in Choma and the surrounding area, KCH’s target group are vulnerable children especially those who are HIV positive. We are targeting a total of approximately 50 children will benefit from the project. Initially, selection will be those children who are most vulnerable. The recruitment will through churches, community, social welfare, Kara Counselling and Health Centres. These centres would make recommendations to KCH and KCH will design its screening procedure.

Goal
To improve the quality of life for HIV/AIDS infected (and affected) children in Choma

KCH aims at improving the quality of life of children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS by providing efficient services to meet the children’s basic needs and give them confidence and courage in life.

Purpose

To facilitate KCH registered children acquiring health care and education skills to enhance their prospects of securing sustainable future.

KCH will provide health care and provide necessities for children’s education. Importantly, KCH will make sure that psychosocial counselling facilities are provided to the children with life skills training.

For the project to be successful it is critical that the local community have clear expectations and support the project.  Activities will be put in place that educate, inform and excite community, which will encourage children to break through self doubt and dare to dream.

Capturing children’s individual case file information on a database will assist with identifying current (and ongoing) case management, thereby creating greater efficiency and time savings.

Networking and maximising opportunities with other organisations / NGOs that provide psychosocial counselling For example, Kara Counselling in Choma will be our cooperating partner in counselling matters.

Results:
The project will raise HIV-affected children’s’ consciousness, awareness and understanding of their longer term prospects.  Responding to the changing environment, the project reinforces KCH’s developmental philosophy.

It will create a more positive attitude and outlook to health care, education opportunities and potential future possibilities among children.  Moreover, it will provide economic empowerment and increase the status of HIV positive children in the community through their active and formal participation in the world of work.  And as children are openly assimilated into the community, prejudices, myths and misunderstandings around HIV will be broken down, promoting a more open and inclusive society.

Activities.

The following activities will be carried out to achieve the results detailed above.

1. The project will be to build a house which will accommodate 50 children (architectural plan is attached). The building will comprise the following facilities: sleeping rooms for children, playing room, toilets, offices, infirmary room, and 3 houses for workers. At the present architectural drawing the houses for workers are not included but they will be designed soon.

The piece of land is too big for buildings only, we will also have farm running with focus on self sustainability.  Crop planting will start almost immediately even before children move in that way we will be assured of food and will benefit as cost sharing. The farm will eventually need to go into full production of dairy product like chicken, cattle and pigs..
  • Engage a landscaper.
  • Source and contract a builder to carry out the building.
  • Engage an engineer to oversee the building

2. We will need also a borehole to provide clean water for drinking and household use. This will mean to contract a company to drill the borehole, which will have a hand pump, water pump and tank.

  • Source and contract a company to drill the borehole
  • Set up the water tank.

3. Tap electricity from the main transformer which is about 5km from the farm land. It means that we will need to pull electricity from the main line to the farm area. There is a nearest school and a rural health post which do not have electricity. When electricity will be brought to KCH, these two institutions will also benefit. The school and the health post is where most children will access education and some medical care respectively. Therefore, we will have to work closely with these two institutions.

  • Source and engage Zambia Electrical Corporation (ZESCO) to put up the power line to the farm land pull electricity.

4. Acquire a motor vehicle for the daily use at the centre. Due to the long distance from Choma Town, there will be need of a bus for the purposes of transport. The transport will help in many ways for the smooth running of the children’s home.
